The Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil, a biodiversity hotspot along the country’s southeastern coast, is home to a variety of vibrant bird species. None stand out more than tanagers. Known for their stunning plumage and "wow factor", these small to medium-sized songbirds exemplify the rich tapestry of life within the rainforest.
Tanagers are often referred to as the "jewels of the forest" because of their striking colors. In the Atlantic Rainforest, species such as the endemic Brazilian Tanager, with its vivid scarlet body and contrasting black wings, can often be spotted in forest edges and gardens. The Green-headed Tanager, featuring a shimmering turquoise head and multi-colored body, flits through the canopy, creating a dazzling display in the sunlight. It's sort of a tropical technicolor version of the Painted Bunting found up in the Northern Hemisphere. Another notable species is the endemic Red-necked Tanager, which boasts a cobalt blue head and a vibrant red throat, making it easily recognizable.
These birds are highly social and are usually found in pairs or small groups. Their melodious songs and calls echo through the forest, serving as territorial markers and useful for attracting mates. The diversity of tanagers in this region is almost beyond belief with over 40 species found in the Atlantic Rainforest alone, each occupying specific ecological niches. One of my favorites is the almost metallic looking Gilt-edged Tanager, again multi-colored with details of yellow, blue and orange.
Birders will be excited to learn that Birding is the World Brazil is launching another All-Female adventure aptly named "Atlantic Rainforest Brazil: The Tanagers Paradise, 2026" (Women's Tour).
